Local philanthropists Bob and Ellie McCabe have been chosen as “2010 Samaritans of the Year” by the Samaritan Center for Homeless Families.
Every year since 1993 The Samaritan Center has highlighted the contributions of outstanding volunteers and donors in Indian River County by honoring them at its Annual Dinner Celebration. This year’s event, featuring the McCabes, was be held on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Holy Cross Parish Hall.
The celebration formally recognizes individuals in our community who have distinguished themselves by their service to others by presenting them with the “Good Samaritan Award”. The McCabes have worked to benefit the community through their McCabe Foundation with a particular focus on mental health. The McCabe Foundation’s largest single gift was $2 million to the University of Florida to establish a permanent endowment to support psychiatry and community mental health in Indian River.
Both of the McCabes know the true value of contributing time, talent and treasure to the many nonprofit organizations in our community. They have also been involved in supporting the Environmental Learning Center, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, The Mental Health Association, St. Edwards School, and the Visiting Nurse Association, among others. In the past they have been honored with the Dan K Richardson Humanitarian Award.
Sponsors of the event include George E. Warren Corp, Barth Construction, Culinary Capers Catering, Grall, Glenn and Grall, The Hill Group, William & Katie Kirk, The McCabe Foundation, Dr. Hugh & Ann Marie McCrystal, Seacoast National Bank, Bill and Nancy Curtis and Bill & Carolyn Stutt
The evening began at 6:00 PM with a cocktail reception followed by a sit down dinner and live auction. Entertainment was provided by Ossie Wright and the Groove Division Band. The Event raised over $51,000 for homeless families in Indian River County.
